Wireless Power Transportation

A possible solution to the earth energy problems
in the middle of the Indian Ocean

A mission of young reporters for the environment consisting of students from all over Europe begins its visit to the island of La Réunion, in the middle of the Indian Ocean. The participants are Rune Madsen from Denmark, Sabrina Redaouia and Jean-Guy Tringwald from France, Sonya Kalamaki from Greece, Paul Loughnane from Ireland, Ayse Asatekin from Turkey and Olivier Clavel their French team leader. The main purpose of this mission is the investigation of a case study dealing with the problem of Wireless Power Transportation (WPT) and furthermore with Solar Power Satellites (SPS). The WPT is a project for transporting power with microwaves and the first system in the world is planned to be installed in the village of Grand Bassin. Whereas the SPS is a future project which will use satellites in orbit which will collect solar energy through solar panels and transport it to Earth through microwaves. The SPS is one of the possible solutions to the energy problem we are facing as it uses a renewable and unlimited source : the Sun. During their stay in the island, through meetings and visits, they are trying to understand what the WPT and SPS projects are and to give answers to an important question : "what are the difficulties to overcome on a technological, scientific and socio-economical point of view to launch the first operational WPT and SPS systems ?". Their role is that of a conveyor of this knowledge and information to the rest of the world through this mission report.
