On
Monday January 2011, 32 students from Die high school had a field trip
to Valence, the main city of Drôme, the district of Die. They were
given a tour of SYTRAD, the recycling and waste management facility of
Valence in southeastern France. They had lunch in a school canteen
where students sort out the remains of their meals, which are then
composted. That composting facility is where the tour was concluded.
The outing was meant to raise awareness about all the issues
surrounding our waste-producing consumer society. SYTRAD handles the
recyclable waste of 23 communities–amongst which Die and its area–whose
total population is 511,018. It is also commissioned with informing the
public. While half of the group were given a powerpoint presentation
about the history and the missions of SYTRAD, the other half were given
a guided tour of the facility. They were shown what happens to the
waste they put in the recycling bins in their communities. They were
especially impressed with the necessity to sort some of the waste by
hand. All in all 40 people work at the facility which deals with 22,000
tons of waste a year. There was time for a Q&A as well which
highlighted the need for reducing our waste, for privileging local
sources to limit the use of transportation and for educating future
generations. At the end of the day the students all said they had
learnt a lot and would pay more attention to sorting their waste more
carefully in the future!

Fall biodiversity outing(en anglais)
This autumn as part of our sustainable development project we, the
pupils of Seconde B (a group of 32 first-year student of the Die high
school in the southeast of France, aged 15-16), went camping out in the
mountains for one night. It was raining but we spent a good time
together with our teachers talking about the project and building team
spirit. There were great contributions from everybody. There is so much
to learn! It was great fun and we got to know each other better under a
tree hung with headlamps and that looked like a Christmas tree. The day
after, we met two rangers of the Vercors Nature Park to discuss
biodiversity near the vulture restaurant that’s in the park. This
outing was a great introduction to the subject for all of us. It has
helped us understand the complexities of the issues surrounding
biodiversity.
