Damien :I didn’t have any opinion before this Comenius project. I had never been interested in this country, perhaps because it isn’t an European country.

Now, I can answer and speak easily about Turkey, before I could only say what I heard in the media or reports.

In fact, I thought Turkey was less evolved and developed than other oriental countries, that’s why I had never been interested in this country.

Now, I see Turkey as a cultural country and I can say it is very interesting and people seem very nice and attractive.

The culture seems very interesting, I have seen by movies what we’re going to discover during the journey in Istanbul and I haven’t any prejudices. Crossing culture and language is very important for my future, later, I will have to use what I know about culture, religion and language of different countries, it will be very useful. Turkey is the best and most interesting of oriental countries, it’s the best to attract foreigners to visit it.

Merhaba Damien,

Now I’ll tell you something that you didn’t know. Turkey is half european. The left half of where I live, which is Istanbul, is included in Europe. On the news, Turkey is portrayed as an undeveloped country! They get those images and views from the poorest parts of our country that are just like other countries’ poorest parts. Also surprisingly, because of Turkey’s geographical position, it has the biggest collection of the past cultures and historical findings.
Turkish citizens are shown as terrorists and uneducated people on most of the TV news. Though it is the opposite. Turkish people are the most welcoming and helpful people that you can ever meet. You’ll see it if you come. I believe that coming here and experiencing such different and unexpected things will help you a lot in your future. We’ll be happy to see you here! See you in Turkey.
Here are some links where you can find some nice pictures of our country;

My vision of Turkey - Laura,1e L

Turkey? What's Turkey for us apart being a foreign country? Of course it's a country whose coast is in the Mediterranean sea and the Black sea in the north. A part in Europe and the other in Asia. It isn' t a country of the European Union. What do we know about it? Nothing. Really nothing. About its religion, its culture, its architecture, its food? That all is different of us. its capital: Ankara, two principals towns, Istanbul in the north coast next to the Black sea and Izmir in the south coast of the Mediterranean sea. They are muslim. We know that there is discrimination against women, but in 1993 a woman was at the head of the government: Mrs Tansu Giller. I don' t have prejudices about this country because it has more than secrets that we think.

Dear Laura,
I can say that Turkey has many interesting things about it, other than its geographical location.
Turkey has lots of enjoyable and unique places to go and visit. The lifestyle here is very lively. Istanbul especially doesn’t look like the place you sometimes see on television. For me Istanbul doesn’t have a lot of difference from other European cities. Plus here, we have lots of enjoyable places to hang out in and ultra-modern malls for eating, shopping, or just window-shopping and meeting friends.

Mina

I think Turkey is an open-minded country which wants to take place in the European Union .

I'm not sure but I heard kebab comes from Turkey. I don't really know what are the Turkish specialities, I'd like to know them. I want to know the Turkish way of life, I heard husbands mistreat their wife and I don't know if it's true. In the media, Turkey looks like a dangerous country but I don't believe this. I'm starting to learn Turkish and I think it's a very weird language, very different from French. I didn't even learn one word which looks like a French word. I think Turkey is not a very rich country and I don't expect a lot of comfort.

I hope music is almost the same but I don't really know the musical culture. I want to know too what politics is there and how it works.

Cedric

Dear Cedric,

Turkey isn’t a very rich country but that doesn’t mean you won’t find comfort here. I guarantee you’ll be very comfortable! You shouldn’t be judgemental without coming and staying in Turkey. You will have a lot of fun. Istanbul is an interesting city. You will find that out for yourself when you come and stay with us. Görüsmek üzere! (a bientot en français)

Is The Turkish language like The French language ?

Lea, Première Littéraire.

I think the Turkish language is strange because there isn't the same sentence construction. Translating is amusing, they have nearly the same alphabet as the French alphabet but the pronunciation is different. We could be surprised to hear that ! So, each language has got its particularity, the Turkish language has its own ! This language is warm and nice, it doesn't require a lot of time, it's very amusing. It's worth knowing a new language because we can learn a lot of things ! ( Turkish culture and Turkish activities for example. ) The Turkish language isn't like the French or English language.

My first remarks on learning the Turkish language is that's the way of learning ( it's very toylike and especially interesting ). Our teacher teaches us the Turkish language with games and many exercises; she looks nice and welcoming. We learn many things ! That isn't like the French language except one word " merci''.

So, a piece of advice, let's travel to Turkey and learn this fabulous language !

Oui tu es correcte, Léa. Les Anglais et les Français: tout le monde est différent, - et les Turcs aussi.. Mais en turc, il y a un grand avantage: tu peux écrire comme tu parles, et cela directement.

Turkish people are very lively, so I am sure that you will like us. There are lots of words which are the same in French: for example : merci, restaurant, gardirop (garderobe), super, not (note), asansör (ascenseur), tretuar (trottoir), antrenman (entrainement) etc.

Bonjour Lea!
Yes you are right, Turkish language is strange for “you”, but it’s not for us. A strange and hard language for us is French. We also had hard times learning sentence construction and tenses. We have been learning French for 6 years and... We suck! Who knows why ?! We also play games like “héxagones” and “les guillotines”. And our heads are decapitated most of the time! Ha ha! Just kiddin’... We would like to welcome you to Turkey but we are afraid that you’ll laugh at our skills in French. Besides these jokes, we really like French also we use it in our daily lives talking to each other (our French teacher doesn’t believe us but he should ask our Physics teacher!!). German students don’t understand when we talk in French so it’s really funny when they don’t understand. Fransiz kaliyorlar kisacasi...

Turkey as it is presented in the media.

Turkey is essentially presented like a future European country. Instead of speaking about its culture, the medias underline problems which could happen with the future entrance of Turkey in Europe. The medias speak about the Armenian genocide, indecent assaults, death punishment and religious traditions. For a lot of medias Turkey is not a good country for Europe but they speak only about different problems and not about advantages and good things. The medias refer to Turkish people with the name " foreigner" which shows the vision of European people.

Robin 1ere L.

My vision of Turkey:Turkey is situated at the border of Eastern Europe. It is surrounded by seven countries : Syria, Irak, Iran, Armenia, Georgia, Bulgaria and Greece and it is bordered by two seas : The Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. There are a lot of prejudices about Turkey. A lot of European peoples see Turkey like a conservative country. Different traditions and customs come principally from the Ottoman Empire, the Middle East and Europe. My vision of Turkey has changed since my parents has visited it. They explained to me that this country is the turning point of European culture.

Lisa 1ere L.

Your vision of Turkey makes us think twice on the issue of the reflection of our country’s image in European nations. At the same time, we question the phrase “european countries”, one of you mentioned that Turkey is not a European country. How did you come to that conclusion? Did you consider the geographic borders of the continent, or the manners of our people? If geography is the reason behind your conclusion, you are mistaken. We are on the borders of the continent of Europe. Or if it is the manners of our people, that is our culture and tradition and we believe it shouldn’t be criticized as “European” or “not European”. We would agree upon the fact that there are some important problems that Turkey is facing and should improve, in order to be considered as one of the leading countries in Europe. However we shouldn’t forget the media who actually create a narrow-minded picture and a negative image of “muslim” countries, not only in France but also around the world.
It is not that we are trying to knock your ideas or argue about the issue, we are only trying to question why the world or simply Europe always seems to believe the media without thinking harder or even researching further.

My vision of Turkey Turkey is, for some people, a holiday place, very touristic, for others it’s a mysterious country, a bit exotic.I’m torn, I don’t know this country, I have never been there, but I can imagine how Turkey is. I think Turkey is a country with its own culture, and I would like to discover it. I imagine traditional costumes, objects, parties… But it’s also a modern country, principally in the big cities (Istanbul) and I’m sure teenagers are like us, with their fashion, their music. I think there are western influences (America, England), like in France. I know, thanks to the media, Turkey wants to enter Europe, I thinkit’s a good thing, it will make progress over the country and the government. But Turkey sometimes withdraws into itself, with a very present religion. There is also a problem with the human rights, which are not really respected, that’s why the country doesn’t manage to enter the European Union. In spite of this, Turkey is attached to its laic inheritance. To finish, I have seen some photos of Turkey’s coast, and the landscapes are magnificent, especially the coast. I sometimes sail with my boat and it’s a place where I really want to go, because the colour of the sea is very light, like tropical countries, and there is another world underneath. Melissa Hi guys!

When I moved to Istanbul two years ago, my friends thought I was crazy. They honestly thought that I would go to school on a camel. Or that I would get married at the age of sixteen. These are common misconceptions of Turkish people. Here’s what surprised me when I first came to Istanbul.
1)Our food is the best – arguably better than Italian food! And yes, Cedric we do have kebab and if you love kebab.... let me tell you that you don’t know anything about Turkish cuisine. Kebab is just the tip of the iceberg =)
2)There are several ultra + modern malls here, and at this second, even more are being built. They even rival most American malls! Istanbul is the heart of Turkey. And Turkey is, (by the way) the heart of the textile industry. So, you’ll find a lot of designer brands for almost half the price. For example: Abercrombie and Tommy Hilfiger make their clothes here – and we pay the same price here for a sweater that people in the States pay.
3)Oh and I’m a girl and I don’t witness too much discrimination towards women. In fact, the people here are warmer then in the States. I never had friends until I came to Istanbul. On my first week here however, I had tons =)

Ps - Don’t believe what you see on Tv

My name is Raphaëlle , I will show in this article my vision of Turkey because I find that if is important to change or to have different points of view.

For me, I have a particular vision of Turkey.

I see this country as hot, warm, sunshine with extraordinary creeks.

I see the sea turquoise blue with impressive sea abysses, very beautiful.

I imagine very exotic cooking , a lot of fruits and vegetables, of kebab and grilled meat kebab.

Immediately when I think of Turkey, I smell the apple tea and the lookoom.

I feel the vibrations of this country like Marocco and Tunisia, but more developed.

I see the white and red colours when I think of this destination which is Turkey.

I feel this population is relaxed but it we must have respect for them because even if Turkey has a reputation of stiffness they have a lot of to teach us and this is precious.

Raphaëlle

My vision / picture of Turkey, is very similar to India. I see two countries with many colours, smiling people, mountains of spices, lovely and very dynamic cities, with a lot of traffic.

But I know, these two countries are very different, and my picture of India is just a commercial vision. And I have seen your school video, and I know, for Turkey my picture is true!

I have seen beautiful markets, with mountains of spices, Loukoums, the typical food, oriental pastry, shech and babouchs with flashy colours. I love this picture! Iwant to discover Turkish culture, to visit Sainte Sophie and Turkish museums. I want to learn about Turkey!

ORIENTAL COLORS AND WESTERN FLAVORS “,Waiter a cheeseburger an five loukoums techekur ederim, “This is the way things go in Turkey today. There is a mix between local food and western food which give the impression of a cultural discrepancy. But not only for food, for style and music too. The elderly are wearing traditional clothes whereas the youngsters areinfluenced by western fashions. Musical instruments as well as the language and very different: between national music and western music. It’s an enrichment for both Europeans and Turkish. They speak their native language but English too. It’s positive because it’s an opening to other cultures.

SOME EXAMPLES OF CROSS CULTURAL INFLUENCE BETWEEN TURKEY AND FRANCE

I think that the cultural influences between Turkey and France are many. First, the language. The Turkish alphabet is not the same as the French alphabet, it contains more letters and some do not exist un French. The Turkish language is not pronounced the same way as it’s spelt. Personally, I think that is a complicated enough language.

We also find differences in the cooking. The Turkish cooking is rich in pastas, meats, fishes, vegetables and desserts. This way, there is not of big difference with the French cooking. However we can mention Turkish specialities: the first one was imported in France, it’s about kebab famous (in France kebab), very appreciated such of teenagers. The second, the baklava, a very sweet Turkish traditional dessert.

As regards fashion, Turkish women have clothing rules that are sometimes strict to respect such as the wearing of the veil, a raincoat and a big scarf hiding hair and the breasts for outside. The emergence of fashion tesettür in the clothes for women is important. Scarves are chosen with colors and attractive motives, and are the signs of chic.

In France, there is no strict clothing rules to respect. For girls it’s great fashion of slim and ballerinas, small shoes which look like slippers. An important majority of teenagers in France are crazy about jeans and Converses, these shoes linen with laces are made with leather. There are all the tastes: green, pink, blue, red, yellow, black, white, brown… squared, spots, and in very differents pictures.

Among the trademarks which we can see with teenagers, there are Nike, Puma, G-Star, “Time of Cherries” (le temps des cerises), Dolce and Gabbana, Adidas… Eastpack and Longchamp for bags and accessories. Dior, Chanel, Gucci, Cartier, and Hermes among others: typically French and are most expensive because those are very considered for their refinement.

Lovely France and lovely Turkey!

We are so different, For “hello” said “Bonjour” and you said “ Merhaba”. We do not have always the same colour but it is not a problem to be friends. We are in the west of Europe, But you are in the southeast of Europe. Your country is synonymous with sun. When I think of Turkish architecture, I think of the Ottomam Style. And when you talk about Turkish cooking I think of loukum and apple tea,But in France the typical food is : bread, cheese and wine. I think it’s very interesting to know other countries and cultures. Everything is different But we are all the same !

MY VISION OF TURKEY

Turkey is a country which is different from France, this is why I have decided to take part in this Comenius project, as I am very interested in oriental countries because all my friends have Arabic origins. I love travelling and especially to oriental countries like Marocco, India and also Asian countries. I would like to discover customs and their way of life. I think it is very interesting to know other people with other cultures as it’s very mind-opening and gives us more strength. This trip will have positive effects on me, I will be changed when I come back. I’m not racist and I will never be, because I know what it is when you are different. I have a lot of friends with different origins and religions and I know this is fantastic to be with people who are the opposite of you. They teach you all news things you didn’t know before and we do the same with them. It’s great. I think now Turkey is a country to discover.
