[|Australia procedures|]

In addition to general procedures to respect under the Applications Overview and Tests to Take, the below information should help you prepare to apply for Australia specifically.

As it is in the Southern hemisphere, the Australian academic year runs from February to November. There is an optional summer session in December and January. You must get an application from the Australian Embassy and send it directly to the university of your choice along with translations of your diplomas certified as correct and identical to the originals and Tests you’ve Taken (apparently even for OIB, but check this out at the embassy.) This must be done by October for the February term or by the end of February for the July term. Acceptance or refusal takes between three and six weeks.

You can get information about universities and how to apply at the Australian Education Center, Centre d’Information et de Documentation sur les Etudes en Australie, Ambassade d’Australie 4 rue Jean Rey, 75724 Paris cedex 15. Phone: 01 40 59 34 76 Website: http://www.france.embassy.gov.au You will need to apply and be accepted by an institution there before applying for a student visa.

For visa conditions, contact : Ambassade d’Australie, Service Visa 9h15-12h15 4, rue Jean Rey 75724 Paris cedex 15 Phone 01 40 59 33 06. http://www.france.embassy.gov.au and http://www.immi.gov.au

You will also need a medical certificate with X-ray and clinical tests (ask the embassy for details and forms that must be filled.) You will also have to get insurance via the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) (average about $A274/year) which covers up to 85% of most major medical expenses in public hospitals, but not dentistry.

Finally, for language qualifications, you may have to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System TEST) and get a score of 6 or above. Contact the British Council, 9/11 rue de Constantine, 75007 Paris. Other universities may request the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)where you need to get a 550 or above. Contact: Commission Franco-Américaine, 9 rue Chardin, 75016 Paris or the Toefl website: http://www.toefl.org or see addresses under USA or Tests to Take

Other information

Upon return from studies in Australia you may be able to get a "attestation de niveau". But check this out in advance by contacting the Ministère de l’Education Nationale, de l’Enseignement Supérieur et de la Recherche, Bureau DGES 1 61-65 rue Dutot, 75732 Paris Cedex 15 Phone 01 40 65 66 19.

Careful, Australia has strict quarantine rules. Again check with the embassy address mentioned earlier.

Costs for enrollment/registration plus living expenses run from 8000 to 26000 Australian dollars depending on subjects chosen. (1 Australian dollar = 4 FF, so this means studies run from 5000€ to just over 15,000€ per year.) So, studies there are a bit less expensive than in Britain and much less so than in the U.S. Undergraduate studies vary from 2 years (an Associate Diploma), the advanced diploma in 3 years and a Bachelor’s degree which can run from 3 years (science, business or arts) to 6 years (medicine and architecture) depending on the subject chosen. Although the French Bac qualifies you for entrance, entry is selective and if your results were not excellent, it may be necessary to take a semester or two of "foundation program" preparation.

In 2008 we had a student interested in pursuing a Bachelor Degree in Medicine in Australia, and he was sent the following information (which I have not edited or verified, but some of which does not apply only to Medical studies):

To find suitable study options for you, please let us know the following:
- preferred study location (Where would you like to study?)
- preferred subject (What would you like to study? Any specialisation?)
- preferred duration of studies (How long would you like to study?)
- preferred qualification (What qualification would you like to achieve? Diploma, Advanced Diploma, Bachelor Degree, Master etc.)

Please find attached a document which explains your education system and shows possible certificates, diplomas and degrees and how long you have to study.

To find the best study option for you please send us the following documents (via email): • detailed CV • details on previous studies (copies of your academic documents) • proof of English language knowledge (e.g. IELTS test) – for medical studies it is much higher than for other degrees! • evidence that you can pay your tuition fee and living costs (e.g. bank statement) • your nationality and your age

IMPORTANT:

To be accepted in a Certificate or Diploma course you usually need to show 10 or 11 years of school education. To get admission in an Advanced Diploma course or Bachelor Degree you need to show a Secondary School Certificate or equivalent education with 12 years school. Sometimes you need to pass your school with a minimum level of marks to be admitted to study in a course in Australia. This is for every country different and each Australian institute will specify this separately. We can advise you about requirements as soon as you have chosen a course and institute.

Also you have to show good English language knowledge to get a confirmation of enrolment. If English is not your first language you usually have to sit an English language test and pass it with a minimum score – e.g. IELTS test. (If necessary we can help you finding a suitable English preparation course in Australia.)

Semesters usually start in Australia in February and July. Vocational course are offered often in Feb, May, July and Oct or more often.

Please be aware as an international student you have to pay for all studies and education. Usually you will pay between AU$ 3,000 – 14,000 per semester (½ year) for tuition which depends on study, institute and length of your education. Sometimes it can cost more than that (e.g. engineering, medicine, MBA). Please note that you only need to pay your student fee for the first semester in advance.

Also you have to calculate 12,000 – 17,000 A$ for your living. (accommodation, food, books, public transport etc.). You should plan 150 - 270 A$ per week for accommodation and 50-150 A$ per week for food.

A general question is in what occupation you would like to work in the future.

1) Course Name: Bachelor of Medical Science

Description:

This degree comprises three areas of major: biomedical science, medicinal chemistry and human bioscience. The biomedical science major focuses on microbiology, biochemistry and aspects of health. The medicinal chemistry major focuses on chemistry and biochemistry, while the human bioscience major focuses on anatomy, physiology and pharmacology. Graduates of this degree will find employment in areas such as medical research laboratories, hospital laboratories and in pathology laboratories and be well suited for positions in the pharmaceutical, medical sales and various research and quality control laboratories, as well as further study including research degrees and graduate medicine degrees.

2) Course Name: Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery

Description:

This course prepares graduates for eligibility for registration as a medical practitioner in Australia or New Zealand. It is an integrated program in which the basic sciences and areas of knowledge underpinning medical practice are learnt in a framework that emphasises active learning, based on clinical and other relevant scenarios. Teaching of clinical skills begins in the first year and continues throughout the program. In the last three years of the course, students undertake clinical placements in a wide range of settings across Greater Western Sydney and beyond. The course is arranged around three vertical themes: Professional Skills and Attitudes; The Scientific Basis of Medical Practice; and Health and Illness in Societies

Study Mode: Five years full-time study

It is more than hard to get an offer from a university regarding a Bachelor of Surgery. There are usually special procedures to select suitable candidates and you have to show a high educational level.

Please note that you only have to pay your student fee for the first semester in advance.

Student visa and work rights

To study in Australia you need to apply for a student visa. To get a student visa you have to show some documents including your Letter of Enrolment to the Department of Immigration as well as financial resources. What documents you will need depends on your nationality. There are 4 different assessment levels. We are happy to assist you in your visa application if you book your course through us.

When your course starts you are allowed to work 20 h/week and between the semesters (study free time) full time. So you have the possibility to finance your living costs partly.

Please also check all other visa requirements (e.g. attendance and academic results).
