Dr. Katie Carr is at a down in her life. After an unsuccessful affair - all because of her angry, coleric and cynical husband, David - her home turns into a battlefield where endless verbal confrontations occur between her and her husband. Hornby excels at conveying this state of tension through lightning fast dialogue and rapid exchanges.

"What, you just want a divorce because I’m not happy?"

"That’s part of it."

"How very magnanimous of you."

"I’m not being magnimous..."

"Tough."

"No. Not tough. You’re driving me up the walls."

"Do what the f""k you like."

However when David meets the self proclaimed "healer" Mr. Goodnews, the angry, negative David is no more, and instead becomes good, too good, unbearably good. Under the influence of Goodnews, David acts in strange ways in order to be "good". He invites tramps, to live in their house, gives away all he has in his wallet to charity. In other words, Katie is now living in another battlefield, convinced that Goodnews is a fraud, and is determined to do whatever she can to prove it.
