SAINT FRANCIS AND HIS LENT

The legends tells that, in 1211, Saint Francis of Assisi was in Cortona to preach the Word of God. On Ash Wednesday he left Cortona to go and spend his lent in penance alone in one of the three islands of Lake Trasimeno, Isola Maggiore. For this reason he asked a friend to transport him there with his boat. However, during the trip, a violent thunder storm broke out, but Francesco succeeded in holding one candle alighted for all the time. Unfortunately, all the crew died, swallowed by the water of the lake except for the Saint who saved himself miraculously. Once arrived in the island, Francesco searched for a place where he could sleep. He found it under a jutting rock covered with shrubs. For forty days the Saint went to pray on a rock by the lake shores. Every day he prayed so intensely as to leave his mark elbows and knees on the hard stone. Today, this rock can still be seen in Isola Maggiore. After forty days of meditation, the Saint returned on the dry land. Once again the lake was under a storm but Francisco hold out his hand to lessen the lake water level. Today, on the place of his hermitage there is a chapel built over a spring. It is said that this spring water has purifying properties . This spring is miraculously active only in summer.
